President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s coalition partners have strongly criticized the agreement reached with the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the Tamil Tigers in Geneva after two-day talks.

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), who signed an electoral pact with President Mahinda Rajapakse before November 17 elections, have condemned the joint statement issued after the talks.

A statement issued by the JVP politburo on Sunday criticised that the agreement to implement the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) which was initially described as “illegal” by the head of GOSL delegation.

“This shows that the delegation, to a certain extent, have succumbed to the pressure exerted by the Norwegian representatives and the LTTE,” the statement said.

The party however have expressed satisfaction on the opening statement and the initial approach at the talks by the GOSL, saying it was a step towards “the correct direction”.

Both the parties have agreed to stop violence activities against each other at the end of two day talks at Chateau de Bossey, Switzerland.

All monk-party Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), have said that the party “have not given any consent” to the contents of the final statement.

The JHU also entered into an electoral pact with the then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, weeks before the presidential elections.

In a statement issued by JHU General Secretary Omalpe Sobhitha thero said “certain clauses” in the agreement reached at Geneva went against the electoral pact with Rajapaksa.

This shows that the delegation, to a certain extent, have succumbed to the pressure exerted by the Norwegian representatives and the LTTE

The party has strongly criticised the agreement by the GOSL team to disarm paramilitary groups.

“It is our position that the agreement is against the Mahinda Chintana policy that was approved by the general public,” the statement added.

President Rajapaksa’s electoral manifesto was named “Mahinda Chintana” (Thinking of Mahinda).
