Stop child recruitment-UNICEF
The UNICEF has called on the LTTE to cease the recruitment of children and to release all children within its ranks. “While recruitment of children in the last six months declined to an average of 43 a month, only 79 children were released and reunited with their families during the same period.” says Ms. JoAnna VanGerpen, UNICEF Representative in Sri Lanka. Speaking to the BBC head of UNICEF child protection in Colombo Victior Nylund said that although the LTTE has always maintained that it does not recruit children for combat purposes the UNICEF has information to the contrary. “All parties should remember their commitment made under the Cease-Fire and this is a matter to be treated with emergency said Nilunds UNICEF says that recruitment of children has been reduced, within the last month to 47, how ever it adds that even a single case of recruitment is not acceptable. Talks aimed at saving the truce are due to be held in Geneva next week, and UNICEF urged both sides to make the issue a priority.
