Call for commitment from President
Sri lankan children with presidient
Expressed his dedication towards children’s welfare
World’s largest organization for Children’s welfare, Save the Children, has asked the President Mahinda Rajapakse to make a commitment towards the protection and promotion of the rights of all Sri Lankan children.

The President expressed his dedication towards children’s welfare at the recent launch of the national Year of Children - 2006.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, The organization say, “that all children irrespective of race, religion, creed, disability or any other difference has to enjoy rights for a happy, healthy and secure childhood. These rights are now enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and Sri Lanka is a signatory to this Convention.”

They further emphasize the commitment and responsibility of the government to ensure the rights of children to be protected and enhanced.

In his speech the President acknowledged, “children not just as leaders of tomorrow but also as citizens of today with a right to participate in decisions that affect them.”

Save the Children has been working with over 250 children’s clubs across Sri Lanka. In 2001, Save the Children convened Sri Lanka’s first ever Children’s Parliament with the participation of 150 children from all over Sri Lanka.
