Media minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa speaking at the media briefing in Colombo said that preparations for peace talks are being carried out in a very methodical manner “all three ministers named to the government delegation are experienced lawyers” Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva will head the delegation. Other miniseral members of the delegation are Trade minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle and Investment minister Rohitha Bogollagama. The Government is holding a series of preparatory workshops said the media minister. Former negotiator GL pieris and former defence secretary Austin Fernando were among those invited to brief the delegation on their past experiences.
The delegation will be supported by a operational committee headed by foreign minister Mangala Samaraweera. Six sectaries to ministries and a number of high ranking security officers have been named to the operational committee. “Talks are mainly to focus on the ceasefire and there is no confusion regarding the agenda as suggested by the UNP said Minister Yapa. The UNP questioned the government about the transparency of the agenda for Geneva talks. In a press conference held in Colombo Deputy Secretary General of the UNP Thissa Attanayaka said that it is not clear whether the talks are going to be on the overall peace process or be confined only to the ceasefire. The Media minister blamed the UNP for trying to create obstacles for constructive talks.
