Donors postpone Kilinochchi meeting
International donors of Sri Lanka have postponed a visit to the rebel-held Kilinochchi after protests by the government allies. The visit by a delegation consisting of World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been rescheduled after the Geneva talks between the government and the Tamil Tigers. “Much hope rests on a successful outcome at the Geneva talks and the agencies did not want to undertake anything that might have a negative impact on the buildup to this event,” a statement issued by the World Bank said. JHU objections Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) and the Peoples Liberation Front (JVP) have opposed the proposed visit by the donors to meet political wing of the LTTE, SP Thamilselvan. Champika Ranawaka, General Secretary of the JHU questioned the “double standards” of the international community. “Those who refused to deal with Hamas after an election victory going to discuss international aid with one of the ruthless terrorist organisations,” he told BBC Sandeshaya (bbcsinhala.com). The donors said the decision to postpone the meeting was taken after consultation with the government and the LTTE. However, a technical team has proceeded to Kilinochchi to review impediments to implementation of ongoing tsunami and post conflict recovery programs, the donor organisations said.
