A doctor in charge of a rural hospital says that a civilian has been shot dead by Sri Lankan military in the wake of a blast that killed nine sailors.
Dr. Upul Jayawardena, the medical officer in charge of the Neriyakulam hospital in Vavunia district said that soldiers transporting the wounded to Anuradhapura and Medawachchiya hospitals have opened fire along the road. "I had ordered the transfer of the casualties from the Neriyankulam hospital situated about one Kilometre from the blast scene," Dr. Jayawardena told BBC Sandeshaya.
Lankadeepa staff correspondent Athula Bandara who visited the scene reported that the person killed by the alleged shooting by SLA troops is a homeguard named Jayasinghe. Several others have also been injured. The blast in the Medawachchi - Mannar road was blamed on Tamil Tigers by the Sri Lankan military .
