The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission says that it has received a number of complaints of disappearances in the North. Nimal punchihewa, Director investigations and inquiries of the Human Rights Commission (SLHRC) said that about 20 complaints have been received within the month of December. Punchiewa was speaking to Sandeshaya after a meeting with defence authorities including the defence secretary and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) along with the deputy solicitor general to review the situation. “Some of these people have been abducted while on their way to work while the others have been abducted in the night,” said Punchihewa. He said that the commission has still not been able to establish who is responsible for the abductions. Defence authorities accepted that they have not been in compliance with the regulations in informing the human rights commission of the arrest made under emergency regulations added the Director of investigations. He said that the IGP Chandra Fernando agreed to reinforce measures to safeguard the rights of those who are arrested under emergency regulations.
