Urgent talks with Norwegian FM

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera is to hold talks with the Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store in Hong Kong.

Foreign Ministry said that the Minister Samarweera is expected to discuss with his counterpart modalities of the peace process.

"In keeping with the Government's commitment to commence talks with the LTTE, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera will be meeting the Foreign Minister of the Royal Norwegian Government Jonas Gahr Støre in Hong Kong on 15 th December 2005 to discuss modalities", the Ministry said.

Norwegian officials have been acting as mediators between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger rebels for the past five years.

The new Sri Lankan president, Mahinda Rajapakse, (who was elected four weeks ago) initially said he wanted a review of the mediation in the peace process, but he later asked Norway to stay on.

The formal peace talks have been on hold since April 2003.

The Minister will be accompanied by Mr. H.M.G.S. Palihakkara, Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs,Dr. John Gooneratne, Secretary-General, Secretariat for Co-ordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP) and Mr. Shanaka Jayasekara, Director(Policy), SCOPP.
