The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) revealed that it is having direct talks with Sri Lankan Freedom Party (SLFP) presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapakse. "We have given him a set of conditions in order to extend our support to him," JVP parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake told BBC Sandeshaya. Talking to Elmo Fernado in Colombo on Monday, the JVP politbureau member told that the outcome of the discussions with the prime minister will be revealed "in a couple of weeks." JVP parliamentary group leader Wimal Weerawansa told journalists on Monday "We can safely say the prime minister is the only candidate worth our consideration". Power sharing The JVP quit the ruling United People Freedom Alliance (UPFA) in June protesting a post tsunami aid sharing deal between the government and the Tamil Tigers. Meanwhile, in an interview with the Associated press on Monday the prime minister has said that he is willing to talk with the LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran. While the JVP is opposed to talks with Tamil Tigers, the LTTE is calling the government to negotiate a power sharing deal for the Tamils. |
