The activites of the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation(TRO) in the UK has been banned by the British Charity Commission(BCC). The press officer Sara Jane Digby of the BCC told BBC that this decision was taken following an investigation which looked into whether the funds had been trasferred to LTTE. The Press Officer Digby said TRO was a registered charity in the UK and Wales. In the year 2000 the charity was alerted to concerns in Sri Lankan media about the TRO, UK passing money to LTTE in Sri Lanka. Following these reports British Charity Commission opened a formal investigation to establish whether these concerns were true or not. The investigation was closed on August 10, she said. The Commission then decided to appoint an interim manager to the TRO, UK. who was independent of the commission. He took over the administration, she said. "He confirmed to us that a few weeks ago that the charity had no assests or money left and it had seized to operate, so was not doing any charitable activity", she said. As a result, the charity has been removed from the register. |
