Sri Lankan authorities urged the international community to take effective measures to combat terrorism in the island nation in the wake of the assassination of the foreign minister. Foreign Secretary HMGS Palihakkara praised the international community for accurate characterisation of the murder as a “truly vicious terrorist act", a press release issued by the foreign ministry said. Addressing the diplomatic community in Colombo on Sunday, he said the assassination bare all the hallmarks of the Tamil Tigers. International law The government urged the world leaders to engage in international law enforcement cooperation against LTTE’s terrorist activities and internationally isolate the organisation as well as the individuals. Jayantha Dhanapala, Secretary General of the Sri Lanka Peace Secretariat stressed the need of a serious review of the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) signed between the Tamil Tigers and the government. However, he said, the government will abide by the CFA signed in February 2002. The government stressed the particular responsibility of the donor co-chairs, i.e US, Japan, Norway and the EU, in the wake of the assassination of minister Lakshman Kadirgamar. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan missions in all over the world have opened books of condolence for the expatriates and those concerned. |
