Relief progress 'hindered by govt.'
Waterlogged tsunami refugee camps in eastern Sri Lanka
Tsunami homeless have been living in temporary shelters for months.
Relief agencies in Sri Lanka criticised the government for holding up aid given to the tsunami affected.

Christian Aid said bureaucratic delays by the government are seriously undermining relief efforts for tsunami homeless.

Christian Aid spokesman Dominic Nutt told the BBC that within the past five months the charities were only able to build just over a hundred houses due to lack of land for reconstruction.

“We need land to build the houses on. But the government hasn’t got around deciding where it is going to happen.”

He said tsunami homeless are getting frustrated as they have been living in camps for five months.

The aid agencies have promised to fund for 90,000 houses for tsunami homeless.

But lack of support from the government delays their efforts, Dominic Nutt said.

Bill Clinton visiting eastern Sri Lanka
Bill Clinton visited eastern Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Aid agencies expressed concern while former US President and United Nations Special Envoy on Tsunami Recovery Bill Clinton visited Sri Lanka’s east, the most devastated areas by December 26 tsunami.

After the visit to Kalmunai, Clinton said there has been progress made in reconstruction work.

However he has observed that the buffer zone requirement has become a rallying point for all the frustrations and complaints of delays.

A statement issued by Sri Lanka's presidential secretariat said the envoy was of the view that some flexibility on the part of the authorities may help solving delays.

Over 30,000 were killed and nearly a million made homeless by December 26 tsunami in Sri Lanka.
