'Are we prepared to divide the country?' | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A Senior government minister says that the coalition will be in a difficult situation if the JVP does not agree to talks with the LTTE.
D M Jayaratne, Minister of Post and Telecommunications told BBC Sandeshaya on Wednesday that the government is left with only two options if it does not have a dialogue with the Tamil Tigers. Only disagreement between the JVP and the majority of the coalition is on having a joint mechanism with the Tamil Tigers for tsunami rehabilitation in the North and East, said the minister who is also the General Secretary of the Peoples Alliance (PA). The PA is the majority party of the ruling United Peoples Front Alliance (UPFA). "If we are not prepared to have an agreement with the Tamil Tigers, then we have to seriously think whether we are prepared for war and defeat them." The other option for the government is "to divide the country and hand it over to the LTTE," added the minister. However, he expressed optimism that President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge will be able to iron out differences within the government when she meets ruling party parliamentarians on Friday. |
