All-monk Sinhala nationalist party and a coalition partner of the government have again voiced strong protest against proposed joint mechanism (JoMec) between the government and the Tamil Tigers for tsunami reconstruction. The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) said the government should reveal the proposed mechanism to the parliament and the cabinet of ministers. Athuraliya Rathana thero, leader of the parliamentary group of the JHU told BBC Sandeshaya that the even the ministers were not aware of the details of the proposed structure. “Media minister Mangala Samaraweera presented a document to parliament on Friday. When questioned, he said it was not the official document.” The parliamentarian said the JHU will not oppose establishing a joint mechanism for the LTTE controlled areas provided the details are available and after a proper debate in the parliament. JVP proposals “If the LTTE is sincere about the reconstructing areas under there control, they should open the areas to NGOs and other humanitarian agencies.” President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s inaction to implement their proposals to build Sri Lanka led to international pressure to implement a joint tsunami mechanism (JoMec) with Tamil Tigers, government’s coalition partner meanwhile alleges.
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says government would have implemented the proposals handed over on January 10 instead. If implemented, the proposed JoMec should abide by Sri Lanka’s constitution and democratic principals, a statement issued by the JVP said. It said the national and advisory committees consisting the president, prime minister, leader of the opposition, MPs, regional governors and government officials should be given the task of rebuilding tsunami hit areas. The statement does not mention the Tamil Tigers or Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). |
