Kandy on high alert for SLDF
Sri Lanka’s security forces have tightened security in Kandy ahead of Monday’s Sri Lanka Development Forum (SLDF).

Elmo Fernando reporting from Kandy told BBC Sandeshaya (BBC Sinhala) that the police have warned the residents not to come to the city unless necessary.

Kandy is on high alert for Monday's international donr conference

“The police have erected check points and searching everybody enters the city.”

Over 150 delegates from donor countries and organisations are expected to attend Monday’s SLDF meeting.

The opening ceremony will be addressed by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Praful Patel, Vice President of the World Bank.

The first session on Post Tsunami Recovery Process will be chaired by Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Minister of Finance and Planning.

TNA letter

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentary group leader R Sampanthan responding an invitation to attend the opening ceremony, says in a letter to minister Sarath Amunugama that “the Tamil-speaking people of the North East have been denied the opportunity of having their views presented at these sessions”.

However, it does not say whether the TNA leader will attend the ceremony.

Nearly 31,000 people were killed when the tsunami struck Sri Lanka's coast on 26 December. A million were made homeless.

Meanwhile, campaigners warned that the World Bank is trying to exploit the SLDF to press ahead with restructuring of government enterprises.

The Trade Union Centre for Rebuilding the Country (RCTUC) said the World Bank’s country director Peter Harrold’s recent remarks on tsunami reconstruction is an attempt to divert the attention of the SLDF.

“Harrold has said tsunami affected is a group that is not the most important to country’s productivity,” Linus Jayathilake, a convenor of RCTUC said.

Sri Lanka’s ‘exclusive focus’ on tsunami rebuilding risks diverting the focus on eliminating poverty in other parts, World Bank has said.
