Unidentified gunmen shot dead a senior official of the Ministry of Hindu Affairs and Vocational Eduction in the eastern region. 63 year old T.Kailanandan was visiting the Technical College at Kattankudy, Batticloa when he was shot. An LTTE pistol man gunned down T.Kailanandan, Director of the Ministry of Vocational Training, headed by Minister Douglas Devananda at about 12.25 in the afternoon on Monday, Sri Lanka military said. He was at the Technical College, Kattankudy since Monday morning attending to some interviews connected with recruitment of new students to the college, Sri Lanka military added. Presidential Commission Session in Batticaloa Meanwhile, the Presidential Commission investigating the background for the assassinations which took place between 1st of February and 2nd of March held its second session on Monday at Court Complex in Batticaloa. The Commission is headed by the High Court Judge J.Vigneshwaran.
Security forces membes giving evidence said that their investigations have revealed that Karuna faction was involved in the two assassinations took place during that period. Although there is evidence that Thawaseelan of Karuna faction was involved in the killing of 'Nivesa' alias Sinnadurai Devananda, he was not yet arrested. Security forces said that during this time two LTTE cadres and two members of the Karuna faction were arrested and remanded. "If the MOU is honoured and movements of persons carrying weapons can be stopped, these assassinations could be avoided", the Sri Lanka mililtary told the Commission. |
