As the hundredth day of the devastating Indian ocean tsunami dawns, refugees in the Batticaloa district are dealt another blow by heavy rains. Shanthi Selvadurai reporting from Batticaloa on Sunday said that temporary shelters have been waterlogged and relief rations ruined. Victims given temporary shelter in sheds on low lying areas have been mostly affected. Overnight people tried to move the provisions to a safer area and also to bail out rain water in the sheds. Victims blamed the government complaining that authorities should take relevant action in time. "We do not receive any attention when in need," one added.
A student who was made a refugee by tsunami said that books that was given as donation was damaged by rain. District secretary P Shivasankar said decisions have been taken to shift the refugees to a safer area of the same paddy store and to provide refugees with sand to dam the water coming in. "We lost our houses to tsunami water; we are made helpless again by rain water," said one refugee who alleged that the government has brought this misery upon them by not providing speedy resettlement. Ampara Meanwhile, tsunami refugees in Komari andThirukkovil said that they were not provided with sufficient water to drink. While the Additional Government Agent Asanka Abeywardhana said that providing water to refugees is the duty of the Water Supplies Board (WSB), MTM Raseel Provincial Manager for the Ampara WSB said that they need 20 more Bowsers to meet the demand.
A petition signed by185 tsunami affected war refugees was handed over to the STF camp in Komari on Sunday requesting not to resettle them in Selvapuram. Authorities have drawn plans to provide housing to the tsunami affected in the Selvapuram area. The war displaced point out that they had to seek temporary shelter in Selvapuram area due to the war, which is not the original place they come from. They request that they be permanently resettled in the 60 mile post area where they lived before been displaced by war. |
