Sri Lanka received nearly nine ships, 10 helicopters and eight air crafts to use in the relief operations after tsunami, officials said. "So far we have received a very good response from Foreign Military Forces", Sri Lankan Military Spokesman Brigadier Daya Ratnayake told BBC Sandeshaya. Sri Lanka received the world attention along with the other tsunami hit countries in the Asia and many counties sent their military contingents to assist the local authorities in the massive relief effort. India was the first to respond with five naval ships. “They have sent nearly four hundred personals for the relief and rescue operations,” Brigadier Ratnayake said. Military training United States deployed a massive 1500 strong contingent with heavy equipment to clear the debris, he said.
According to Brigadier Daya Ratnayake, American, British, Canadian, Japanese, Bangladesh, Indian, Pakistan and many other foreign forces are assisting Sir Lankan authorities in providing medical care to cleaning up missions. He said that most of the military contingents are from Medical cops and they are providing medical assistance through out the effected area. When questioned whether these foreign forces will provide any military training to Sri Lankan Armed Forces, Brigadier Ratnayake said " Sri Lankan army do not expect military training from these visiting forces. They are all embarked on humanitarian missions.” |
