UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has visited the south coast of Sri Lanka, one of the areas badly hit by the tsunami. He visted the affected areas at Hambantota, Galle, and Trincomallee. While he was there he met prime minister, Mahinda Rajapakse, and pledged support in the long term for the rebuilding effort. Secretary General Kofi Annan visted a temple and a mosque in Hambantota and talked to the refugees including orphans. Later, at a meeting in Hambantoa District Secretariat attended by government officials, chief ministers, Mr.Annan reviewed and assessed the situtaion. "Sri Lanka will be given priority when donors meet shortly", Mr.Annan said. He agreed to set up a co-ordinating office in Hambantota. In Trincomalee, he personally inquired about the facilities provided to the refugees in two camps; one for Muslims and the other for Tamils in Kinniya. Mr. Annan is expected to have talks with President Kumaratunge on Sunday. |
