Politicians fighting over refugee camps | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The market place and all the houses on the coast in Hambantota are in absolute ruins and about 100 corpses have been brought ashore by the military. In Tangalle the fishing villages are all in debris says Gnanasiri Kottigoda, who visited the southern coastal areas on Sunday. Cranes are deployed to clear the area of scattered fishing boats. The editor of “Haraya” Sinhala weekly Kottigoda says that politicians from different parties are seen to have taken charge of different refugee camps and it is now creating problems between the parties. A politician of Sri Lanka freedom Party (SLFP) and another from the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) have had a bitter row over taking refugee camps under their control. A research officer of National Aquatic Research Authority (NARA) who has been running a refugee camp and an ex MP from United National Party (UNP) have also had an argument. Some political parties are advertising their banners in front of the camps that they claim theirs. |
