We are ever ready for peace talks - JVP
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that it is not opposed to peace talks with the Tamil Tigers.

The JVP has brought thousands on the streets to voice their opposition

In response to a strongly worded announcement by foreign donor countries in which they urged the government in Sri Lanka not to allow the JVP to undermine peace efforts, the JVP said in a statement on Thursday, "we are ever ready to for peace talks but not on the basis of the ISGA"

The LTTE is awaiting a response from the government to start the stalled peace talks, based on the Interim Self Government Authority (ISGA) proposals put forward by the LTTE.

Norwegian diplomat Erik Solheim, who is back in Sri Lanka who already met the Sri Lankan President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge and Tamil Tiger political head S P Tamilselvan in a bid to renew peace talks has urged both parties to "exercise the maximum restraint and refrain from actions that could be interpreted as provocations".

Japan, the United States and the Netherlands said on Wednesday that they were concerned (and bewildered) by the activities of the JVP which is staunchly opposed to the Norwegian-brokered peace deal.

After meeting the president, donor representatives issued a statement on Wednesday, expressing "deep concern about the ongoing JVP-led actions against the peace process in Sri Lanka and the government of Norway's efforts as facilitators of that process".

It said that the JVP is engaged "in such a campaign in absolute contradiction of the clearly stated position of the president and the government."

The JVP statement says that the "different visions" on solutions within the ruling alliance "will be ironed out once they are discussed during the peace talks".

Stating that "democracy is flourishing" in the US, Japan and the EU the JVP statement signed by General Secretary Tilvin Silva assures that they have their "doors fully open for discussions with your Excellencies".
