Wickramasinghe says JVP should support the peace process
Government’s junior partner Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) should publicly apologise for interrupting the peace process, Sri Lanka’s main opposition said on Monday.

Opposition leader and the leader of the United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickramasinghe said JVP is creating hurdles for President Chandrika Kumaratunga in her attempt to restart the negotiations with the Tamil Tigers (LTTE).

He told Sandeshaya’s Elmo Fernando that JVP should apologise to the public and support the president to continue with the process.

The former prime minister was speaking in Colombo after issuing new membership cards to UNP members.

“Oslo Declaration”

He said UNP would support the president to restart the peace talks based upon the principals set out in “Oslo Declaration”.

However, LTTE’s chief negotiator Anton Balasingham questioned the existence of “Oslo Declaration”.

“It must be stated that there was not any specific proclamation titled the ‘Oslo Declaration’. The decision to explore federalism was included in the record of decisions at the Oslo talks,” Balasingham writes in his latest book titled “War and Peace”.

Tamil Tigers walked out of the last round of talks in April 2003, in protest over the government's negotiating position.
