Jan Peterson to meet Prabhakaran | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A high-level Norwegian delegation is expected to travel to Sri Lanka this week to revive the peace process between the government and Tamil Tiger rebels. Discussions between Norway's foreign minister, Jan Petersen and the Tamil Tiger leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, will be held in rebel controlled area on Thursday, a senior spokesman for the LTTE told BBC Sandeshaya. The Norwegian minister, who arrives Colombo on Wednesday, says he does not have high expectations but that it is important to keep engaging with the parties.
A Tamil Tiger official delegation led by political wing leader SP Tamilselvan recently met Norway’s deputy foreign minister Vidar Helgesen while on a European tour. The top-level meeting between the LTTE leader and the foreign minister was agreed for detailed discussions of the current stalemate of the peace process. A ceasefire was brokered by Norway in February 2002 but subsequent peace talks collapsed after the rebels pulled out of negotiations last year. |
