Leeds Metropolitan University has conferred on actress Shilpa Shetty an honorary doctorate at a student graduation ceremony on Wednesday 18 July 2007. Earlier, in honour of the International Film Academy's visit to Yorkshire last month, Leeds Metropolitan University conferred honorary degrees on Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and Yash Chopra. "The honorary doctorate is in recognition of Shilpa's outstanding contribution to cultural diversity and good relations between the people of the United Kingdom and India. It's a proud moment for all of us," said Dale Bhagwagar, Shilpa's publicist. This has been a busy week for Shilpa who was also chosen to launch the Mayor of London's India Now initiative in central London. She met the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone and officially opened a series of cultural events. A miniature version of the Taj Mahal was floated down the river Thames to mark the opening of this prestigious event which is said to celebrate the ties between the two countries.
