| Run is the story of Siddhu (Abhishek Bachchan) who comes to the city to attend college. As most Bollywood films would have it, Siddhu falls for Jhanvi (Bhoomika Chawla) and love becomes his main priority over studies. He tries to woo his lady, but she does not give in easily to his charms because she is protected by her brother, Ganpat (Mahesh Manjrekar). He cannot tolerate having any man near his sister. So no prizes for guessing what happens next. Sidhu gets engaged in a battle with Ganpat in order to win his sister. We are subjected to yet another Hindi pot boiler whose story has been repeated many times. The only difference here is the hero. Abhishek Bachchan gets to play the role which most other Bollywood stars have already done in the past. There is nothing novel about this film. If you have seen Satish Kaushik's Tere Naam, then you will know what I mean here. The director fails to explain why Ganpat is over- protective of his sister. And when push comes to shove, Ganpat suddenly changes his attitude. He readily accepts his sister's boyfriend. The action packed sequences will definitely pull the crowds into cinemas where Abhishek Bachchan beats up a whole army of men single headedly. After all, we are talking Bollywood here! Bhoomika's performance as Jhanvi reminds us of her role in Tere Naam where she was petrified of Salman Khan's character. The difference in this film is that she is scared of her big brother. Mahesh Manjrekar as Ganpat appears loud throughout the film. Why he suddenly accepts his sister's lover towards the end is not explained clearly. This is Abhishek Bachchan's film. He plays his character with conviction. He gets plenty of scope to showcase his talents whether it is acting, fighting or dancing. On the whole, Run is a movie which will only appeal to the few, especially if you are an Abhishek fan. Reviewed by Manish Gajjar, BBC Shropshire’s Mr Bollywood |
