In all the exhibition features nine pieces of his work carved from stone from around the world. Entitled Mappa Mundi, the exhibition takes centre stage at the outdoor Meadow Gallery, which is in the grounds of Burford House, near Ludlow. It's on again this year after a successful summer at the same location in 2004. | Stephen Cox's work |
It's all based around the concept of the 13th Century map of the world held in Hereford Cathedral. The Mappa Mundi recorded real places as well as mythical, Bblical and spiritual lands. It only records eight sites in England, yet one of them is Clee Hill. And the exhibition features Cox's latest work, entitled Clee Hill and carved from pieces of local dhustone. | Stephen Cox at work |
It stands amongst eight other pieces carved from Etruscan peperino, Indian basalt and Egyptian Imperial red porphyry. Stephen Cox has worked for many years in India, Italy and Egypt but has recently settled his main studio in south Shropshire on the flanks of Clee Hill. A major figure in recent British sculpture, Stephen Cox has had many acclaimed exhibitions abroad and in Britain, including solo shows at the Tate Gallery and the Dulwich Gallery. | Yatra by Stephen Cox |
