The water vole is officially Britain's most rapidly declining mammal. Loss of suitable habitat and an increase in the numbers of American mink have led to the water vole population becoming scarce. Water voles were once a familiar sight along our riverbanks, and the inspiration for Ratty in Kenneth Grahame's classic story The Wind in the Willows. As part of BBC One's Nature of Britain series TV presenter Miranda Krestovnikoff travels to Whitchurch in search of this endearing species and finds out what is being done to help them flourish. Miranda finds out more about creating new habitats and how to monitor predators of the water voles. Watch films from this region - the West Midlands - from the Nature of Britain series on BBC One.
