Local Democracy Week

Young People Today

'Young people today...' It sounds like the beginning of a million moans, 'It's not like it was when I was a kid'. But this time, young people had their say in an event staged by Telford and Wrekin Council as part of Local Democracy Week.

Local Democracy Week 17-21 October 2005 focused on the role young people play in their community. There was plenty of dynamic debate at The Place in Oakengates as Telford and Wrekin Coucil proved that democracy isn't just for voters.

In an event chaired by BBC Radio Shropshire's Eric Smith, young people showed that they were keen to have a say in the way the borough is run. Among the most popular issues raised were litter, grafitti, communication, policing and vandalism.

Respect was also a key theme. Some teens also brought up the issue of facilities in the area and how they're used.

Corporate Director for Children and Young People, Christine Davies said: 'Children and young people contribute so much to our schools and communities and we feel it is important that we hold an event specifically geared towards them, giving them a chance to talk directly to us about the major issues which affect them.
