Art has never been so colourful or quite so relaxing! We took a tour of Alan Parkinson's stunning Luminarium sculpture in Telford Town Park (open until 6th August). | | Alan Parkinson's Luminarium |
It's not often that you can actually walk around inside a piece of art, but then it's also unusual to come across an inflatable sculpture. Alan Parkinson is a member of the 'Architects of Air' group, and whether you look at this as architecture, design, art, or simply a giant (slightly quirky), unbouncy castle, it's an amazing experience. The sculpture is a labyrinth of interconnecting tunnels, mazes and chambers, each boasting a variety of colourful backdrops and individual features. The Luminarium also stimulates a range of senses. You're encouraged to not only look around you, but also touch the various surfaces and listen to the music and sounds piped throughout the different chambers. The audio is a powerful tool in itself. Music is overlaid with speech, poetry and seemingly random sounds. All the audio featured has been conceived and recorded locally, with contributions from many different Telford communities. | | Alan Parkinson's Luminarium |
Covering an area of 1,200 square metres, it often feels as if you're inside a huge lava lamp as you wander around the structure and bathe in the primary colours. The visit to the Telford Town Park Arena is part of a world tour. Luminarium is open Thursday 4th August - Saturday 6th August (1.30pm-5.00pm on 4th and 5th; 11.00am-6.00pm on 6th and 7th). Entry is £3 per head or £10 for a family. The site is also accessible by wheelchair users and those with visual impairments. |
