The Lion Hotel, Shrewsbury

The 'haunted' Lion Hotel

Amateur ghost investigator Stuart Edmunds and a group of friends went ghost-hunting in one of Shrewsbury's oldest hotels - The Lion on Wyle Cop. Read his report, then tell us what you think at the bottom of the page.

"I recently arranged a paranormal investigation at the Lion Hotel in Shrewsbury after being told by an old friend that he thought it might be haunted. I had no preconceptions of what to expect before I began the investigation as any strange phenomena that has ever occurred at the hotel hasn't been widely reported.

"I was surprised to find that it had stopped recording by itself despite there being 20 minutes of tape left."

Stuart Edmunds

It wasn't until my arrival there that I learnt of ghost sightings in six areas, which I decided were the best places to begin the vigil.

Armed with digital and night-vision cameras, our first point of call was the corridor of room 209 where staff have reported an eerie feeling and it is said that a guest once committed suicide in one of the rooms here.

The atmosphere of the corridor wasn't particularly welcoming but I stayed to take a few still photos which when checked later showed numerous 'orb' lights. Nobody really understands what these lights are.

Staircase showing 'orb'

The 'orb' in the corridor can be seen bottom right

It is said that they could just be dust particles reflecting off the flash light but I have begun to doubt this as they only pick up on the occasional image and no dust had been stirred during our short vigil on this corridor.

The first photo shows one of these orbs in the bottom right hand corner.

Over the course of the night, more of these strange balls of light were picked up on camera, but only in locations that we were told were haunted.

We spent time in the Dickens suite that is positioned in the original 17th century front section of the Lion, where an old style telephone appeared to move of its own accord from where I had set it up as a trigger object.

Close-up of the same 'orb'

The 'orb' at full size

In the Adam Ballroom; a room that has been graced with the presence of world famous musicians and politicians throughout its history, it is said that a grey lady haunts the balcony.

Although we saw no sign of anything in human form, orbs were picked up on the balcony and there seemed to be a lot of footsteps coming from above when I was sat below.

The one place that did unnerve me during my stay at the Lion Hotel was the cellar, where several staff have said they have felt uneasy.

It is a huge cellar, with several dark passageways leading off in all directions that I investigated by torchlight. Once again, more orbs were caught on camera and I picked up some strange flashing lights on my camcorder in a dark arched room.

Indents in the chair

Stuart says these indents appeared in the chair

When I returned alone to my locked off camera which had been left recording for an hour in the cellar, I was surprised to find that it had stopped recording by itself despite there being 20 minutes of tape left.

As I picked up the camcorder I was also startled by a loud bang right behind me but when I turned around, there was no one to be seen…

By the time we came to investigate the Tudor bar, where the ghost of a soldier in uniform has been seen by staff and guests, it was getting late and we still hadn't seen any real solid visual evidence of anything paranormal.

I walked around taking a few photographs of the bar then left the room to take snapshots in the hotel reception.

When I returned to the bar, my partner and I were startled to see indents on a leather stool as if someone had just been sat down on it (see photo) yet no one had left or entered the bar while I was around the area. After taking the photo, the indents began to disappear.

Pleased with what we had both witnessed, we headed back to base upstairs and along the way stopped in the hallway outside the Dickens suite to take a few more photos.

Stairway showing orb

Another 'orb' can be seen in front of the stairs

We were both sure that something creaked on the stairs in front of us as if someone was walking down and here I caught the clearest orb of the night.

This orb is much denser than the others and coincided with some ghostly footsteps on the stairway.

Although the visual evidence I gathered on this investigation wasn't as clear as at other locations I have visited, there were enough strange occurrences at The Lion Hotel to warrant another night time vigil in the future…"

Have Your Say

What do you think? Has Stuart uncovered paranormal activity or was it a trick of the night? Have your say here

that was very good piece of writing i was confused about the orb bit though

terrie
i believe this its true

Kelsie
Yeah sounds pretty ture 2 me as i have stayed in the hotel my self i didnt wana stay at this hotel as i didnt like the look ov the out. But over nyt wen we was asleep it felt like sum one was standing at the bottom ov the bed watching us. X

ryan
I reckon its true !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John Comway (west Midlands Ghost Club)
Orbs are simply dust and moisture particles close to the lens when the flash is used. To prove this, go into your bedroom at night and take a photo of the room with the flash on and then take another one once you have banged the pillows and duvet and I'll guarantee there are hundreds of the blighters. I get them all the time on investigations and completely ignore them. Show me an orb partially obscured by something and I'll start to believe they are something other than dust particles.

@andiiiiiibaybiiii@
DONT BELIVE IT ITSOBIVIOUS THAT IT'S A CON SO SOMEONE CUD AVE EASILY OF SHUNE ALIGHT ON THRE SO THERE U GO !!!!!!!!!!!1XXX

fleur jones
do you know the name of the ghost?

Dave
The 'orbs' could be investigated by using two cameras, preferably with different lens designs to avoid similar flare patterns appearing in both. If picures taken at the same time with both cameras show an 'orb' in the same location, it's worth investigating further, but I suspect that this would actually prove that they are artifacts.

Jodie Humphreys
I think that it is strange but on the photo why is it a dot and why do you call it an orb.

terri
i do belive in ghosts iv seen a fue as a child includding my dead grandmother she died b4 i was born and i never seen a photo of her un till i told my dad wot id seen at the bottom of my bed she was singing to me a song she sang to my dad when he was little...but i too are not convinced by the chair photo, i have a chair thats gone in the middle just like that its jue to old age and big bums the fabric splits im the middle over time so i think thats all it is on that photo..sorry

Toby
i belive ghost and orbs are all real if you go round a room in your house at night but not the same room you are sleeping in you are bound to find a ghost.Like the pub opposite Long Tall Sally there is known to be a ghost in there and it is true because there is a devil in the attic and who ever goes up there commits suicide and there has been 2 people killed. There was the cleaner and one of the owners. So try what i said go around a room at night with a camera and try it out.And my girlfriends mum's friend has a daughter and was saying something is pinching me and when they taken the photo you could actually see a ghost in the photo i would send it but on my gf phone sorry.

We recently selected this hotel for an overnight stay by chance and had no previous information or knowledge of paranormal activity. The night was restless for me as I was aware of doors closing, floors creaking and voices speaking in muffled tones throughout the wee hours. I had no preconceived theories but by whim inquired at the desk when checking out if their hotel "boasts of ghosts" at which the hostessaffirmed but suggested that they were careful with whom they shared that info.It wasn't frightening but did explain my sleepness night in Shrewsbury. The next night's stay was much more satisfactory. Hope this is can be of assistance to you.

Mike Jones - The SPIRE Society
The Orbs issue.. what can you say! It's apparently due to digital cameras not have a true zoom function like a standrad 35mm camera. What a digital camera does is merely unlarge an image and you end up with these strange orb shapes. In fact they are dust close to or even on the lens. If anyone has any photographic evidence of other anomolies though I would be happy to take a look and even post on the SPIRE website. www.spiresociety.com

trace
I do believe in ghosts as i saw many of them as a child but i am not convinced about the indent on the chair.

lucy
i am a great believer in ghosts. yes i do think they are orbs that you've caught on camera. and i think it's spooky how the chair had dents in like sum1 had bin sittin on it.

nonolala
i don't think its an "orb" it looks like a splooge of water on the camera lense. and as for the dents in the chair sometimes a slightly old chair will lose some air from its seat cution and make a dent like that. i want to have proof of ghosts and not for people to get so exited!!!

Taylor Brotherton
i think maddam and piggott is real because everyone talk's about her and i belive in goast's

I worked at the Lion many years ago and yes the floorboards creek and yes you do get some strange noices and can find yourself listerning for them . Most old buildings of this age are the same , however I must say that the cellar of this hotel is rather spooky and the ballroom does have cold spots and not just when it is empty and late at night but at any of time of day. A lot of it is mind over matter but when working on wedding functions I did feel as if the temprature changed from area to area in the room. Most things can be explained I think and you must remember ghosts if they exist at all will only appear if they wish and only to certain people and when they want to if at all.Its like the Burmuda Triangle and I think will never be explained.

Receptionist
I use to work at the Lion several years ago and I never saw anything unusual. However I have worked at The Lion and Pheasant furthers down The Cop for the past 6 years and I am convinced I have seen Light Orbs myself . Also I took a picture of the Bar area on My mobile phone three years ago and afer enlarging and zooming in I was convinced that I saw a monk figure in the picture . Other staff was intrieged but this could have been absolutley anything. Iam absolutley sure we do not have ghosts and these things are a myth. However you should never dismiss such things as I still do see light orbs but what the explanation for such things is I do not know but It does keep you guessing as I will agree Shrewsbury does have some very old buildings my home itself is around 300 years old. A guest showed me a picture of a victorian girl in a picture he had on his phone . This appeared when a friend took a picture of a group at a wedding at The Bell Hotel in Derby I would have said it looked like a ghost on thr picture . It was in the papers he told me up there , then I discovered it was on the internet and was a very haunted hotel. This prover you should never say never as you dont know . Im intreiged but thats all . Like big brother who knows who watching you.AN YES I AM SANE in case you were wondering but some may disagree ha ha !!!

I used to work in the Lion about 6years ago now, i used to lay the tables in the ballroom with the balcony. I would work untill around 4am and usually on my own. The main lights wouldn't be on, just the lights on the stair way. The room was full of mirrors and fire places and i thought my own reflection was the only thing i had to worry about! For weeks i felt nothing and knew nothing of any ghosts, the thought hadn't crossed my mind, when one night i was going about my business when i suddenly felt uneasy, tears started welling up in my eyes and a lump in my throat, i felt sick and nervous. I didnt want to seem daft so i carried on. as the week went by, it got worse and i felt very unwanted in that room. It got so bad in the end i had to refuse to work on my own, yes i felt stupid but it was unbearable. I later found out when i confided in a member of staff that there was a resident ghost on the balcony and that 'she' had been seen by quite a few people. I hadn't seen her, but she certainly made her presence felt and i soon left. I often walk past and smile about it as i think she was just having a laugh!

fliss
My friend lives in a very old, terrace house close to the sqare. And we have heared and seen many strange things there. Her parents have felt blowings down there necks, her tv turns off by itself, my other friend has had the bathroom pullstring light switch swung at her and i have actually seen it. i was sleeping in one of the bedrooms on the first floor when i saw a black human shaped figure walk through the room and into the ensuite, it didnt feel like an angry ghost and it didnt take any notice of me.

Rachel, 14
Ah! Me and Maddy are gunna go Ghost Busting! When we come here i'll take pictures of all the places you have and see if those orb things are there.By the way! I heard a ghost in that alley way next to the theatre near the square. I couldn't see the blood on the wall like it's meant to be, but i heard him say "go" so i went, 'cause i'm nice =]

Keith
this is a common phenomenon on digital cameras - i am told it's caused by condensation, and have regularly picked it up on several cameras - sorry guys but no mystery there!!!!

xxx
i used to work in the lion hotel back in 06 and felt the chill of a breath in the back of my neck as i changed one of the beer barrels in cellar, the place is haunted allright

Natalie
Me and some friends are going to stay at the hotel in January so i'll post a note on here if we see or feel anything during our stay.

sarah and katie
We don't think that it's true. Because the seat could have just been sat on by a person then they left.

Alexandra and Mathew Lloyd
We both think this hotel is haunted. We both worked here 12years ago for 3 years and some strange goings on happend to both of us. My husband stayed in one of the rooms it was a single room and his body was pushed in to the bed he said he felt like somebody was on the top of him (no it was not me he was by himself) I was setting up for a wedding in the ball room it was late afternoon and foot steps on the ball room floor made me look round to see who was there and say hello but nobody was around the room went very cold so i left and didnt go in thatt ball room by myself agin only when i had company....

My grandmother,Mrs Dorothy(dot)Horton was for a great many years the chief linen mistress in the Lion Hotel. As a child she would regularly tell my sisters and myself that she had once again seen "the little girl"...She also regularly saw a gentleman she described as having a black suit in an early victorian style with a tall black hat who she claimed would knock her pile of fresh linen over creating a mess.Moving objects were common place to her and on numerous occasions she would watch this happening. On one occasion my grandmother and John Lennon (yes,John Lennon) watched a painting in one of the rooms move to the left and hold still as if being held and to the right again doing the same thing.John Lennon drew my grandmother a doodle in her autograph book of a moving painting and it seemed to be a private joke between the both of them.My gran and John were friends and when he stayed at the Lion he always asked my gran about the "moving painting" whilst having a cup of tea with her.

tracey owens
The actual photo's look very good, and was surprised to see the indents in the stool, even when you said that no one had been there, besides yourselfs.

Amanda
Yes, I believe the Lion Hotel is definitely haunted. I'm a very spiritual and religious person, and have a sixth sense. I currently live in a haunted appartment and have seen light orbs such as these not only in my home but in other places as well. That is the spirit's ball of energy. Ghosts or spirits manifest themselves in many ways, be it a smell, a mist, a full-scale apparition or simply poltergeist activity. I have experienced all of this in my appartment and can fully believe that the Lion Hotel is haunted. It's hard to get these spirits to leave. It is as if there are bound there for some reason. Perhaps following a traumatic event that occurred to them there or just because they like the place and don't want to leave. It helps to talk to them if you are on your own and feel eery or a sense of being watched.

Hi my family & i stayed here after a wedding reception on the 7th July 2007 my brother & his partner were staying in room 209 my mum & step dad in 206 & my sister & i in 110. When we arrived at the lion hotel you could just sense the old atmosphere but not in a scary way it was as if you could feel the hotels history. The floor boards of the hotel were very creaky. Since tellin my brother about the corridor on which he stayed, he did say that he thought he heard creaking. It was a lovely stay though. With all the history that comes with the hotel i do believe that there are guests you just don't see.

nicki aged 13
well one i went into the hotel and i saw a little girl climbing the stairs i blinked nd then it was gone it was so freaky and then a week later i saw her again and i saw her sittiing on the stairs crying but then i gt scared 2 i ran away nd avent beejn bk since

Marc
I worked at the lion hotel for over a year, and had to walk around at 3am in the morning and I didn't get any strange feelings apart from down in the celler. But that might be from the celler cooler!!! The dents in that seat were there when I arrived and guess what there were still there when I left a year later!

I found these orbs on photos I took last Oct. but didn't pay them any attention until this Easter. Last October I thought I must have opened a can of pepsi, and the fizz somehow got on my camera lens. So many of the photos were messed up with these orbs. Then this Easter the family were all together again, and my photos were full of these spots again. Between last October and this Easter, I have taken countless photos, and never noticed this spot problem. Now going back thru my older photos, I see these spots from time to time, but hadn't noticed them before. I don't believe they are the reflections off dust, as much as I'd like to believe that. My photos were taken with several different cameras, from digital to regular 35mm. So, it's not any one camera. What is it? I don't believe in ghosts. I believe in the Bible. Having seen other evil manifestations in physical form, I can tell you these orbs are demon spirits. When you hear "that little voice" inside your head whispering a nasty or hateful thought, you can bet there is an orb near you, trying to lead you astray. I could go on about this, but now I am thinking, you'll either see the truth of this, or you won't. My prayer is for God to touch your heart and open you to the truth. To protect you and save you.Haunted, yes, but not by any such thing as lost souls. Haunted by the devil and his demon followers.

Rach
I started to belive in ghosts after seeing something i cant explain in the nags head shrewsbury. the lion hotel does come across haunted...but need more proof, not just orbs.Shrewsbury is so paranormaly active i love living here, with all its history you would think we would be bumping in to ghosts everywhere.

nathan garnham24
i think that they have witnessed paranormal activity as u can see from the pics the orbs are see thru and white. and besides the film three men and a little baby contains a ghostly shadow of a child in the window, if u watch closely wen the woman walks past the window holding the child u can see the ghost in the window. they have tried everything to erase this image but just cant get rid of it. If you look at the ghost in the film and look at these orbs they r very similar.

missy
yeah to the obviously narrow minded, scared and ego driven rob- some of us can spell. try living outside the box and experiencing something from someone elses point of view. i believe in what you saw stu- keep up the good work and ignore those who are just out to pass judgement on what they don't understand

John Ewin
Hi I read your report with great interest as I am not only live near the Red Lion but I am also a medium and paranormal investigator. I congratulate you the way you reported your investigation, but the orbs I’m afraid can be explained as natural courses. Best of luck with future investigation. John.

karen
hello im a member of a paranormal group pastlife we investigated a house down the road from the lion hotel, madam piggot we go lots of orbs and it was scary you should try

mikey b
nice orb, although if you want a picture of a real ghost, try number 12 middlegate, in harlescott grange. i used to live there and a hooded monk holding a candle that wasnt lit used to follow me down the stairs everytime i went down. I have never been the same person since.

chitown_slim1@yahoo.com
the orbs you have in the pic look just like the ones i took in my own house i thought it was the cam i used but i used 3 difernt ones and thay were in all of them that weeked in my own home i seen the same orbs and one had a cat face in the orb and it made the hair stand u on my arms and blue smoakey lights were all around the room i dont know what this means and i never ever seen any thing like this i came accross you web sight looking for answers on this i had the feeling it was all my dead famley that was here all here it seem to only start with one or two orbs the as the weekend came thay were all over my house this has me at a loss i dont know if i am going crazy could someone explane this

Reef
The thing is spirits are everywhere, they are compositions of elements. Some eminate themselves in light some in air, some in fire, and so on. I've seen the lights. Your photos may be true but some seemed replicable by use of current technology.

emily ( again)
my ghost can be seen heard and the orbs are everywhere. no one believes me but i believe in this

Peter
i think that your photo's are fake i believe in ghosts but i don't believe in your photo's

sarah cooke
is this real? Yes many orbs are round this hotel because i slept in that hotal for 2 days and i had a shiver down my spin

John
It is known what the "orbs" are - it is light reflected from dust particles close to the lens. They are definitely NOT other "life" forms. Digital cameras are paricularly susceptible to this aberration.

Dave
Used to work at the Lion, never saw anything unusual although I would always feel uncomfortable when I went into the cellar.

TIFFANY
Even though i am very young i have seen some weird stuff too, and so have my family. I beleive in spirits and my great aunt is a spiritial mediam. My dad took some photos of our house in France and on the photo was these "orbs", just like you we did'nt know what they were. So i do beleive you because your not like my mates who just go o.t.t when saying they've seen stuff. Great photos!!!!!!!!

Emily
I believe in Ghosts cause my home is haunted- my ghosts a roman man- my house is on a roman site.

Laurie griffiths
Im a great believr of ghosts and my family have all witnessed them, and Gareth, the picture is on the article so therefore many people have witmessed them.i have recentley visited rowleys house and felt a hot and cold sensation and a feeling of someone watching me in the top bedroom, so much, as i had to leave the site.

Gayle Mitchell
Hi i live in shrewsbury and i used to be a chambermaid at the hotel and i never saw anything but i cud usually feel the presence of something or someone. I am a great believer in the supernatural.

Brady Lee Pierce.
That stuff is FAKE!! like the chair someone could of sat in it BEFORE you got in the ROOM!!!!!!

peter
i helped with a karaoky there one night and did feel a presance and a cold feeling as i walked down the main stairs while going to the bar seen 1 orb as i turned in the corner of my eye it shot up right in front of me but it made me feel safe i dont know why

James Fletcher
I think its true there are loads of strange places in Shrewsbury. I know it very well and often been spooked by things there. I've had the guts to walk through the streets and Quarry on my own at night and it proper freaked me out. Kept having feelings of somebody watching me. Next time I go with somebody else.

thomas pountney
i think stuart has uncovered paranormal activity. a place i think you should try out is the old three pigeons in nesscliffe near shrewsbury

darren childs
i think you did find something i have lots of paranormal exsperiences before seen lots and also have spoken to some i would love to come and join your team in an investigation please get back to me

Ester
Shrewsbury is of course a very old town and one where there is much spiritual activity sometimes energies become trapped on this plane and so seem to frequent particular buildings. But if like me you've seen spirit since a small child you will know that they have many ways of letting you know they are around you, flashes of light or colour, scents no one else can smell and senses and thoughts that seem to come from know where to name but a few, and mostly these spiritual energies are your own guides family & guardians all they want to fo is get in touch!

gary
having worked at the lion hotel and knowing a little of its history it seems strange that a grey lady haunts the balcony as the original balcony which was on a wall at right angles to the present one was destroyed by fire in the 1950's, or is it a modern ghost?

Carlie
I ahd my wedding in the Ballroom and stayed in the Dickens Suite and didnt feel anything! I am a scardy cat and think i may have felt something if it had been there, but you never know whats out there!

luke
this is clearly not enough evidence to write a report you need to film it or place webcama around the houe or sound-rcord it and more pictures this is clearly not enough evidence and could of bin done on the pc luke hughes telford

Katherine Lunt
I think it was paranormal The orb's are real and the indent the stool was made by a ghost

mark spade
are they sure its not light reflected on the lens or dusk thats been caught on the lens also?or to put it another way it kind of looks like someone shining a torch somewhere.

Wendy van Meel
I Think that the socalled orbes are real, and the indent... i think i will believe that story. That picture of that stool is convincing. I believe this is real!

jonathan
i work at the lion. it is apparent to me that you have not found out anything at all and you are just commenting on tales you have heard from staff.and those dents in the stool are always there. i would be happy to hear wot else you have found out from your own investigations, rather than wot you have been told in hearsay.

Ian Johnson
I think that the paranormal is a subject to be broached with extreme caution Lorna, I have heard stories that would make you curl up in the fetal position, and sometimes the force of feeling can be so strong you can almost smell it.

Lorna Brown
I belive in the paranormal and i do think that the Lion Hotel along with other buildings and areas in Shrewsbury are haunted but im not convinced by what i have just seen and read. If you are investigating a building in which someone has told you is haunted and on top of that is extreamly old then you are going to think you have heared things on the stairs or on the balcony but the truth is its proberly the building itself creaking with age. not convinced by the orb pictures as to me they are very vived and rather large. Its as if they are desperate to be seen?! as for that picture of the stool may be the evening didn't go to plan so they decided to take a picture of the stool on which they were sat drowning their sorrows at the bar!

Josie
There is without a doubt something there, you may want to look into the Adams House Hotel in Newport Shropshire this is also belived to be haunted, as are a number of property's in the town, i think my house may be one of them!!
