What is the Royal Highland Show?
A four day event focusing on work and leisure in the Scottish countryside, this is the highlight of Scotland's rural calendar with, on average 155,000* visitors each year. The 170th show is set to be held in 2010.
When and where is it?
The show takes place annually at the end of June at the Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston, Edinburgh.

Why is it called the Highland Show when it's in Edinburgh?
The show is organised by the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS) which was established over 200 years ago to promote the trade, agriculture, poetry, language and music of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Today, it is principally known for the Royal Highland Show but it also promotes all aspects of rural life in Scotland including agriculture, horticulture and forestry.
Is it really for me? Isn't it just for farmers?
There are many agricultural aspects to the show, but it also features a wider look at the Scottish countryside with a variety of entertainment and activities on offer.
Can I take my children?
Yes! This is a family-friendly event with lots of opportunities for children to learn about the countryside, food and farming.

What are the highlights?
- Stalls showcase local food producers with tastings and demonstrations
- Livestock events and displays
- Top chefs, taking part in daily demonstrations in the Food Theatre
- The grand parade of animals on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the main ring
- Showjumping competitions
- Food and drink tastings
- Live music
- Shopping and crafts
Can I take my camera?
Yes, however, bear in mind that flash photography may startle animals so it is best to exercise caution in areas holding livestock. Send your photographs from the show to us at [email protected]

What if it rains?
The show goes ahead no matter what the weather conditions! Keep an eye on the forecast to find out if you'll need your umbrella.
Will there be anywhere to eat?
Yes. In addition to the tastings offered in the Food and Drink Exhibition Hall, and as you might expect from an event showcasing the best in Scottish produce, there are numerous outlets around the showground where food and drink can be purchased.
Isn't the showground moving?
There were plans for Edinburgh Airport, which lies beside the showground, to expand into the land currently owned by the RHASS and for the showground to relocate to a site on the other side of the A8. However, these immediate plans have been shelved and it is likely the showground will not move for at least 20 years.

Where can I get a ticket?
Tickets are available in advance from the Royal Highland Show website. They are also available at the gate on the day.
