Huntly, market town

With a population of just 4000, businesses in the market town of Huntly have traditionally served the local rural areas. With the decline of the high streets in many other small towns in agricultural areas across Scotland, the potential impact of competition from two new supermarkets in nearby Turriff was seen by many as a threat to local businesses.

In an attempt to tackle this threat, the Huntly community set up a monthly farmers' market and a local festival, the Huntly Hairst, as well as other projects such as a rebranding exercise and a loyalty card scheme.

Sarah Mack visits Huntly to find out about the local retailers' fight to stay in business. Broadcast on Landward in September 2009.
