Jiang Geng Gui - The farmer

Jiang Feng Gui stopped farming rice in order to make more money growing some very different crops.

  • China is one of the world's largest producers of grain - second only to the USA.
  • Although some farmers, like Jiang Feng Gui, are being encouraged to grow 'luxury' crops - popular with the rising number of well off consumers - the Chinese government wants China to remain self sufficient in main food crops, like rice and grain.
  • Food prices rose sharply in China in 2007, partly because of supply problems due to natural disasters. During this period China decided to export less grain to the rest of the world. Since February 2008 food prices have risen more slowly.
