Trondra is one of the Scalloway Islands, part of Shetland. The Scalloway Islands sit opposite Scalloway on the Mainland in Shetland. Inhabitants of the islands traditionally supported themselves by crofting, fishing and associated activity. Large scale fishing round the islands has largely given way to small scale shell fishing and fish farming. Many of the smaller islands are no longer inhabited, although some contain holiday homes. As with other islands in the Scalloway group, in the 20th Century Trondra was becoming depopulated. In 1970, road bridges were built to neighbouring Burra (West and East) and to the southern peninsula of the Shetland Mainland. Since then the population has recovered.

Shetland Group

Shetland is one of Scotland’s 32 unitary council areas.

It is an archipelago of approximately 100 islands to the North-East of mainland Scotland. Of these, only 15 are inhabited. The largest, Mainland, is third-largest Scottish island and the fifth-largest of the British Isles. Lerwick is the area’s administrative centre.
