Prestonpans is a town in East Lothian. A settlement was already established here by the 12th Century, when monks from Newbattle and Holyrood based themselves here. The monks set up pans along the shore, manufacturing salt from sea water. By the 13th Century, the monks mined coal in the area. The industry continued into the 20th Century and encouraged further industries, including glass work and brewing, to develop in the area.
The Battle of Prestonpans was fought here on 21st September 1745. In this film, pupils from Preston Lodge High School argue that the Jacobite battlefield at Prestonpans needs to be rescued from years of neglect.
