Giffnock (East Renfrewshire)

Giffnock is in East Renfrewshire. Although it is administratively outside nearby Glasgow, Giffnock is geographically an outer suburb of the city and part of the Greater Glasgow conurbation.

Giffnock had been a scattered farming community until about 1789 when the Earl of Eglinton was forced to sell off land in a number of small properties in order to raise finances.

The cornfield shown in the original photo formed part of Orchard Farm. Together with McCrone's Farm, Orchard Farm stretched from Robslee to Park Road and up to Burnfield Road. The farm continued to operate into the 20th Century. The photograph was taken on what is now Barrland Drive looking towards Fenwick Road, where the tenement block in the background still stands.

East Renfrewshire Group

East Renfrewshire is one of Scotland’s 32 unitary council areas. Until 1975 it formed part of the county of Renfrewshire. The East Renfrewshire local authority was formed in 1996, covering the same area as what was then Eastwood district, with the addition of Barrhead, which came from Renfrew district.

It borders North Ayrshire, East Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire and the City of Glasgow.
