Dunmore (Falkirk)

Dunmore is a village on the Firth of Forth, in Falkirk.

It was built as a 'model' village in Victorian times by Catherine, Countess of Dundonald, to house her estate workers and their families. Previously known as Elphinstone Pans, Dunmore was home to salt pan workers and then coal miners and their families.

Dunmore was the centre of the Forth salmon fishing industry. The method used was hauf netting, where one end of the net was paid out from a cobble on the water and the other was walked along the shore.

Today, Dunmore is in the ownership of the National Trust for Scotland and is a conservation area.

Falkirk Group

Falkirk is one of Scotland’s 32 unitary council areas. It borders North Lanarkshire to the south west, Stirling to the north west, West Lothian to the south east and the Firth of Forth to the north east.

The council area was formed in 1996 with the exact boundaries of Falkirk District Prior to 1975 the majority of the council area was part of the county of Stirlingshire and a small part, Bo'ness and Blackness, was part of the former county of West Lothian.
