James' first wife, Madeleine de Valois, died only months after their marriage. James then married Mary of Guise, daughter of the powerful Duke de Guise. After James’ death Mary ruled Scotland on behalf of her infant daughter, Mary Queen of Scots. Video: In Search of Scotland: Court and Kirk.
