I am researching a book on the history of women in engineering in Scotland. If you or any female relative of yours ever worked in any branch of engineering (construction, mechanical/metal trades, electrical, shipyards etc) I would love to hear about it.

I had a collegue in an electronics company a few years back called Gina. She was a very clever, very attractive graduate engineer who progressed rapidly through the ranks. There was a famous story about dear weegie Gina.
Standing at the stores hatch at around 3 am in the morning, Gina eventually leant against the bell, hoping to wake the (probably) sleeping storeman. After about 10 mins a bleary eyed chap arrives and before he gets a chance to speak hears the immortal line:
"ye ken wit Derek ye wee bam. Its easier te git intae ma knickers as it is te get onythin oot yur stores"
The last I heard of Gina she was a teacher on the west coast. Lucky kids...

Hi, we are really interested by the Scottish women engineers for our study. Many of the people in our group think there was none before the 70s. Have you found any? If so, would be please to know.

Sorry I havent been back here for ages. I have a considerable list of female scottish engineers, both at the professional and craftworker levels. You can see some of my list at the following: http://uk.geocities.com/scottishengineers/
I also have now a list of women who took engineering courses at the Scottish Universities before 1970. First ones were around WW1 then a bit of a gap from the 30s to the 60s. I am currently focussing on women in the building industry in scotland and have a whole wall covered in lists and pictuers of women in this industry from 1820 onwards. I would be particularly interested in hearing from anyone who can recall tales of female relatives who had worked in construction or engineering trades before WW2.
