Helena (Adams) Laius from Markham, Ontario, Canada. Posted 21 Feb 2003. My parents brought me and my two sisters to Canada in 1957 thinking it was the "good life". Although we have prospered, in this country, does not mean it has been the "good life". The "good life" is having family around you, feelings of your roots, being part of your homelands history. I came here when I was 10 years old but I have never felt that this was my country and it is not. My country is Scotland. I try to visit and explore the land as much as possible. The more I visit, the more I fall in love with it, the people and the traditions. There is just something about Scotland that you can't let go off and we shouldn't. | | |

Helena, I have never emigrated, but the feelings you have shared with us on the forum, strange as it may seem, I empathise with everything you have said, my own Grandfather came to Scotland from Ireland, and his brothers and sisters emigrated to the USA way back in the early part of the 20th Century, and although I have never met my grandfather's relatives, or even know their whereabouts, I sense an inner feeling, which I cannot explain or comprehend, but this feeling is strong and good, somehow it is like at times, we are all together and are equally aware of events and places, even though we are total strangers in different lands and unknowns...the shrinks probably have a medical term for this, and they would say it is probably our imagination playing tricks, but people's roots, and their love for each other are the feelings human beings nurture and they become important strong bonds within families whether we aware of them or not, and as people we never forget our roots and loved ones, no matter where they may be or how hard some of us may try to forget them, the world is all our homes, and one day, if we want to, we will all meet all be it, maybe only ever in our minds, happy thoughts....
