I did my apprenticeship in Edinburgh in the 60s and remember the stair's having gas lighting in the old Leith Walk and old St Leonard's. Does anyone remember the old stuffed rhino in the Bristol port area?

Hi R. Mc Connell
I noticed your letter in the forum and was quite surprised to learn that there was still gaslight in the stairheads in 1960,I came from Paisley and if my memory serves me correctly,we said goodbye to the old fashioned gas mantles round about 1932,but it is interesting to see the difference in the towns in Scotland,Lang may your lum reek Yours Aye Alex.

hi r. mcconnell -- i served my apprenticeship with the edinburgh corpo. 1958 - 1963 at shrubhill/central/longstone -- I still remember the old gas mantles in the old tenaments down leith way -- we lived in cables wynd (banana flats) before coming here in 1968

I remember the gas lights well. I was brought up in Grove Street, in Fountainbridge. It's changed a lot now and there are lots of modern developments around the area. I think its lost its sense of communty though as the place is now filled with students and young folk. We used to play peevers in the street all the time but things change very quickly these days.

Hi there.I am at the moment doing an sort of Biography of life in Scotland in the early 50's through to 1969 I was born in Port Glasgow and the Gas Mantles were still on the streets and Tenament Blocks
