When we were younger we could never afford a holiday, so during our break from school we got a bus to Cove. We’d climb all over the rocks and made fires to cook our food over. Our first real holiday came when I was 16, we went to Blackpool and found a cheap place to stay.

I remember we had lovely fish and chips, went to a carnival and swimming. I was lucky because I had a pal who had relatives in Peterhead, so I went with her round to their houses. We would cycle on our bikes, I had a ‘daisybear’ it had big wheels. I loved that bike, my dad bought it second hand for me.

I have many happy memories of day trips to Helensburgh and Largs, or in a caravan at Millport, Arran or Rothesay.
Leaving fom the Broomielaw to Dunoon, as a wean I thought I was on one of the big ocean liners. I do remember getting the day off school to see the QE2 being launched. I didn't realize it at the time, but what made these days special, was that they were spent with my Dad.

I enjoyed reading your letter re holidays and your family trip to Blackpool. My husband and I plan to visit Aberdeen on our next visit to Scotland. We have traveled the West Highland railroad and that particular area, but viewing your home city on the internet has been very enjoyable.

Love to hear about holidays pre and post war. Did you go on cycling trips, camping hols or in a caravan. How were your holiday pics made? In a box Brownie? Did you stay under canvas for a week or two. Were the roads quiet then? (not like nowadays!) How did you spend your summer hols. Were they better than nowadays? Love to hear your stories.

Hello,
I am researching holidays/leave in Scotland during World War Two. I wonder if anyone might have memories of holidays/leave taken during World War Two. The government encouraged 'stay-at-home holidays', people were encouraged to use public transport as little as possible, petrol was rationed. Parents found it difficult to get out into the countryside to visit their evacuated children. How did people spend their time-off/leave? These are some the areas I am looking at. The research is for my contribution to a book on Scotland's War. It would be really great to get some memories/views/ideas on this subject.

I left Aberdeen in 1952 at 7 years of age but have retraced my Mum's memories, one of which was going North to Colliston about 15 miles, for a summer holiday. My Grandfather would still be able to cycle back to the city for work as a constable with the Aberdeen City Police. I remember riding that same bike when on holiday home in 1962. I believe it was 27 inch wheels. James Hill PC 109
