Jim Jamieson from Larbert. Posted 19 Apr 2004. I remember going to a pantomime in Glasgow and one of the female stars was Movita. Was this the same Movita who appeared in the original Mutiny on the Bounty with Charles Laughton ? | | |
| | Anita F from Glasgow. Posted 21 Apr 2004. Hello Jim
I had a look on the internet for further details about the actress Movita. Aside from appearing in the 1935 version of Mutiny on the Bounty, the Mexican actress Movita Castenada was also the first wife of Marlon Brando. I could not find any details about her appearing in a pantomime in Glasgow, but i did found an obituary of an Irish boxer and singer who had also been married to Movita. It said that Jack Doyle, a one-time boxer who made a career as a singer when his sporting times ended, had met and married the Mexican actress Movita, after they had performed together in Cork. Now if Movita made it as far as south west Ireland, it stands to reason she may have visited Glasgow! If anyone can help shed any light on this matter to help us further it would be much appreciated.

| | Christina from Browning. Posted 19 Jul 2004. Movita was not Marlon Brando's first wife. She was his second wife. His first wife was Anna Kashfi or a.k.a. Joanna O'Callaghan. She lied to him and said she was East Indian when in reality she was irish. When he found this out, they were divorced.
As for Movita Castaneda and Marlon Brando they had a child Miko Brando but were later divorced. Their son is the security guard for Michael Jackson.

| | paul nugent from louisiana, usa. Posted 18 Aug 2004. This was most likely the same Movita who was married to Jack Doyle and later Brando. Very interesting life story. I think she is still live and in her late eighties. Story of Jack Doyle and Movita would make a great movie.

| | Ailbhe Maher from Dublin. Posted 16 Oct 2006. I've been reading the postings on the site and I am very interested to hear that Movita is still alive. Does anyone know how to get in touch with her? I'm working on a documentary on Jack Doyle and would love to talk to her. Also would love to talk to Frank, Jack's nephew.

| | patrick smith from London. Posted 16 Oct 2006. Jack Doyle, was my grandads cousin, John Ward of Galway in Ireland. The story of Jack Doyle in our family is still strong today with my children. My mother told me of the time Jack Visited our family home in Galway and stayed for a period of time with his wife then Movita, happy memories, my mother is in a nursing home now but is still sharp and able to recall these times, she is now 76yr, her name is Mary Theresa Smith (Ward). Jack Doyle was known to knock out a donkey with one punch, My understanding is he died in the 70s ending up a door man at a club near where he lived and died without any member of our family with him as he disappeared from all of us, this was a great shame and a shame I never got to meet him although I would have been very young. Glad that this site is running and gald I could share this with you all. Best wishes Patrick.
