nick wilson from Vancouver, Canada. Posted 15 May 2003. While standing by the building of a ship at Dennys in Dumbarton in early 1956, we made up a party with the girls from the tracing (ship plans) department and rented a coach to go ballroom dancing in nearby Glasgow. I remember the evening well, but have forgotten the name of the hall. Can anyone help me with some names? | | |

The best bet is the Locarno. Nearby was the West End Astoria which are unlikely. If the girls were up for strictly dancing then the Albert (Warren's) would be in the frame.

| | Jeff Ingram from San Antonio, TX. Posted 10 Aug 2005. I was in the U.S. Navy in 1961 and went to Locarno's dance hall in Glasgow. Locarno's was huge, packed with couples and everyone shuffled around counter clockwise in a large oval. The place was so crowded that you couldn't dance but just mill about. It was an experience!!

I didn't go to it but my older sister went there were she learned to dance. It was situated between the stalls of the Palace Cinema and the circle.

| | Raymond Humphrey from Frederick, Maryland. Posted 16 Sep 2005. Sir, I had forgotten about the rotating bandstand but you've described the place just as I remember it. Just as you were leaving in 1964, I was just coming aboard but, whether you were Black or White, rich or poor, the best place in Scotland, for dancing and picking up the birds, was Lacarno's. It was built almost like a casino. It even had a balcony!! Thanks for the memories from all of you!!

| | Heather Robertson from Glasgow. Posted 16 Oct 2006. Hi there,
I am an image researcher at the Museum of Transport in Glasgow. We are currently researching the Locarno dance hall which was once situated on Sauchiehall Street. I wonder if anyone has any photographs of the dance hall dating from the 1940's-50's that they may be willing to loan to the museum? I would also be most interested in any photographs of 1950's dress and dancing. If you have any interesting stories about the Locarno or remember details that might be of interest please get in touch.
Many thanks and kindest regards,
Heather Robertson

I went to most of the dance halls in glasgow but thought the best was Locarno because you could stand on the balcony and watch to see if you could spot anyone you knew and some you would like to meet!!
