Holidays in Scotland

I remember going to a fishing village in Fife called Pittenweem. My Aunt who lived in Glasgow had a house there and if we had more than two days off school we went there. We used to have a great time and in those days we never locked the front door, so we were able to come and go as we pleased. There was a great outdoor swimming pool which we went to every day. Not far away was Anstruther, St Monance and Elie, all places we used to walk to when we wanted a change. Oh happy days.

I grew up in Stonehaven in the 50s. The family ran a guesthouse so new friends to play with arrived every Saturday in the summer. This was before package holidays in Spain and families stayed for a week or a fortnight and some families came back year after year. There were lots of activities organised for the visitors and we locals joined in as well. There were scavenger hunts (I remember knocking on doors in the caravan park to find a bun penny), talent competitions, beauty competitions, fishing competitions off the harbour pier (they eventually had to give separate prizes for visitors and locals because we knew where to dig for bait and always won hands down). I expect there were dances in the Town Hall as well but I was a wee bit too young for them. Midnight swims in the open air pool where everyone got a certificate. It must have rained but I can only remember the sunshine and freedom.
