Veronica Hann from Queensland Australia. Posted 19 Feb 2004. looking back over 40 years ago I always remember the school dinners at Caledonian Rd Primary School oh they were tasty and the menu was great you never knew what you were going to have. always 2 courses and I was looking forward to going in to grade 7 because then you could be a server (take the meals around)
It used to cost 1 shilling a week and was great value for 5 meals. Can anyone else remember these? | | |
| | Laurie Frater from San Francisco, U.S.A. Posted 2 Mar 2004. On Mondays, you'd buy 5 purple tickets (for 5/-) on a tear-off strip, and hand one in each day as you entered the canteen. There was mashed potato (from an ice-cream scoop) with everything, and the periodic mystery meat (I recall we called it buzzard's neck). And all the jokes about school custard - which never tasted quite as bad as the sago pudding that semed to be served up every third day!
Those were the days!

Posted 21 Apr 2004. i used to love all the "frogspawn" and milky puddings we got at school; sago, semolina, rice and all that. i loved getting the milk too in the mornings. it's a shame that the government got rid of it. my grandson says that they can buy fizzy drinks at school now, and that doesn't sound as healthy as milk for something youngsters should be drinking. I always thought the food we got at school was better than what i got from my mother, who wasn't the greatest cook, really..

| | Helen Millar from Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Posted 24 Nov 2005. I hated the school dinners. I went to Burnbrae School in Priesthill and then to Sir John Maxwell, in Pollokshaws and at both these schools we had to finish everything on our plate.
I used to spend my whole dinner time trying to eat "frog Spoan" - Semolina & Gooseberries, creamed rice, custard. Do you know to this day I still don't eat them!
