For years myself and my brother would look for a bomber that had crashed in the Kilpatrick hills.
Does anyone know if this is a myth? | | |

I believe the bomber u talk of was a heinkel 111, shot down on March 13 1941 by AA flak guns at Bishopbriggs. The plane crashed in the Campsies, near Lennoxtown, I believe.The pilots are buried in Lennoxtown.

A junkers JU88 bomber crashed in Lennox forest in 1941 after being pursued and brought down by an allied fighter. The german aircraft was attacking the nobel explosives works at Ardeer, Ayrshire. Two crewmen were killed and two captured after bailing out.

There is a file kept in Lennoxtown Library behind the desk which has at least 2 references to the downed bomber.From memory,one is minutes from a council meeting and the other is about the minister who refused to have swastikas on display at the burial of the airmen.I think both extracts were from the Kirkie Herald.

It wasnt a JU88 mate,thats a short range 2 seater dive bomber,it was a bigger plane an HE111 bomber,and as it was a night raid,no fighters were in the air this early in the war I think,most probably ( on record as being ) hit by Anti Air Batteries.

I was born in lennoxtown just before the war and the plne you speak of did hit the Campsies. The pilot was buried in the graveyard behind the High Kirk
