At the end of the war my family who had spent nearly three years in Millport returned to Bridgeton, Glasgow and I went to John Street primary which was in Hozier Street off Dalmarnock Road. On Saturday mornings , wearing my best clothes, I went to Miss Paterson's elocution classes held in Cuthbertson's Studios in Sauciehall Street. We had public performances every year in The Lyric Theatre and hired our costumes from Bambers Theatrical Outfitters. Later, when the Glasgow Academy of Dramatic Art opened in the old Atheneum buildings, I went there after school on Thursdays. I used to broadcast on Children's Hour with Auntie Kathleen and once played a little Highland boy with Stanley Baxter as my father. In those days you only had to write to the BBC for an audition if you were twelve years old. At school in Bridgeton I was teased for talking posh and nicknamed "Jolly Hockeysticks" after a character in ITMA, the famous radio show. At the secondary School I used to win The Burns Competition every year run by the Bridgeton Burns Club and had to recite at the winner's concert in the Bridgeton Public Halls.

Did you remember the family name Reston from that area?

I am writing up the story of my family. During the war my father was not called up as he owned Cunningham the bakers in Guildford Street Millport and he was the only qualified baker left to run the business. I know he was very busy feeding refugees as well as the locals and I would welcome any comment by someone whose family remembers living in Millport for the duration of the war.

I'm sure that I played with Cameron Cunningham during the war where his father had the bakery where we used to buy the best scotch pies that I ever tasted. They were only made once a week so we children had to queue up while my granny made the mashed potatoes and bisto gravy. The pies were red hot and wrapped in brown tissue paper. I remember going to a birthday party in the bakery and the spread of homebakes , sandwiches and sausage rolls washed down by Barr's Iron Brew was unforgettable. We lived above Maclachlan's fish shop. I had a brother David and a sister April and we all went to school in Millport.

Hi Cameron I'm sure we played together during the war and I certainly rememember your father's mutton scotch pies and once attended a birthday tea in the bakehouse. We lived above Mclauchlan's fish shop. By the way we were evacuees from Glasgow not refugees.

I was really interested to read about Cameron's father being the only baker to run the business in Millport during the war. I am writing the text for the new museum exhibition in Millport's Garrison House, so I would love to talk/ write to anyone who remembers what life on Cumbrae was like then - those of you who were evacuated there too! Thanks.
