Agnes Gilbert from British Columbia, Canada. Posted 3 Jun 2005. I was born and raised in Millarbank St Springburn through 1946-1964. I lived right across the street from the Police Station and the Public Hall. Have wonderful memories of growing up in Springburn. My name then was Agnes Smith and my Dad worked for the Railways. Still see him coming "up the dunny" from Cowlairs Road at night when I'd go and meet him. I went to Colston and then at 15 to work at the Glasgow Herald and Evening Times. Great pals, great neighbours and a great place to grow up. My best friends then were Ellen Shaw and Jean Campbell. | | |

You brought back memories of myself playing in Millerbank Street in the middle thirties, they were poor times but good times, we lived in 31 Gourlay Street, first close down from Miller's Sweetie Shop and if you had looked out your back window you would have seen ours. Good Luck H.King

| | Raymond Mooney from Papatoetoe, New Zealand. Posted 10 Nov 2005. Hello Agnes I lived at the other end #78 from 1939 untill 1951 when we got a new corporation house in Barmullock. We emigrated to NZ in 1959. The old building is gone now and just as well I remember Millerbank street as a lively place where kids could always find pals to play with it was hard to get into serious trouble as a niebor was always watching, a tenement building was like a small village.

All I know is his name is Allen McNulty, was born approx 1947, and lived at 99 Galloway Stree. I have recently visited Springburn but found no clues, I wonder if you might be able to help? Meanwhile enjoy your memories, Aline.

| | Jim Reid from Niagara, Canada. Posted 13 Mar 2006. Hi Agnes, I was born at 42 Cowlairs Rd. in 1941 and I have some great memories of Auld Springburn. I went home again in '88 after almost 20 years away and I stood at the corner of Cowlairs and Springburn Rd and cried, for they'd demolished our birthplaces. The Greatest Industrial Centre in Glasgow's history and some government idiots wipe out a big part of it and Glesgow's history!
By the way, did I ever dance you at The Public? LoL!

| | Joyce Travers from Kirkcaldy. Posted 13 Mar 2006. I was born in Marchfield Terr in 1949 and lived there until 1957 when I moved to a strange place called 'the New Town of Glenrothes'. My father (Jim McKenna) worked as a driver on the railways at Springburn and moved to Thornton. I could have been on Mars, the difference from Springburn was so great! My grandparents and my two aunts on my father's side (McKenna) also lived there. I went to Albert Primary and remember Miss Bell, Mrs Melrose and Miss Elliot as my first teachers. My cousins (Irene and Linda)and our friends used to 'dreep the dykes', play 'cops and robbers' and 'kick the can'and loads of other games in the very safe cul de sac next to the lock ups. (all been knocked down for years now).
I remember getting a nail in my knee when I was climbing in the lock-ups and my dad had to take me to the Royal Infirmary...on the tram, to get a stitch in my knee. Everyone was so friendly and looked out for each other. The children were well-behaved because they knew that all the adults would tell their parents if they misbehaved. I used to sit outside 'Jeana's' Sweetie shop with my Gran and all the 'old ladies' with my embroidery or my knitting...I was only 5 or 6 then and felt very grown-up sitting with them. It would be nice to be in touch with Anna McPherson or June ? whom I remember from then. I also remember John Boyle and Alan Suttie. I have a school photo from about 1955-57 if anyone remembers being at Albert Primary (at the top of the'wee hill' opposite Henderson's shop!) then, I would be happy to give them a copy. Although I have lived in Fife for almost 50 years I'll never be a Fifer!Whenever I'm asked where I come from I always say...Glasgow!! I was also in the 2nd Glasgow Brownies attached to Johnstone Church.
