My Mother From Bute
There are 10 messages in this section.

ANNE-LOUISE from Greece. Posted 31 Jan 2005.
My mum Betty Gordon Miller was born in bute on 18th March 1939, but she has not been back for over 40 years. However, we have planed a trip to take her back in June of this year. So far my research has gone very well in finding her family.
As she has no photos of her life on Bute or her childhood it would mean the world to her and to me if I could somehow find a school photo. I am puting together a scrap book of every thing I find as a surprise for her. I have even found a photo of her father William Stark Miller, beter known as Willie the sweep. She went to Rothesay Infants and Rothesay Academy.
If anyone can help i would be so so grateful. Thank you.

Hello I am Karl from Grimsby. My mother is akso from Rothesay and her name is Margaret Robertson and she is the same age. She wants to know if your mother remembers her or her family the Robertsons who lived in Blain Terrace when they all used to go to the schools together she has sisters called wilma, helen, jean. isabel, the twins May amd Maureen and brothers Jim, Ian and Robert. My mother said your mothers name is very familiar and she is going to see if her or any of her friends have any of the photos from school with your mother. My mother says was your mother's father - a chimney sweeper she isnt sure but she seems to think that. I will leave you for now and hope to hear from you soon and hope to have some good news for you and all the best in finding some yourself.

My father, John Orr was born in Rothesay'33 and i am sure he has pictures of the Acadamy somewhere, but he is in the process of moving back to Scotland after 50 years away, so he will not be able to access them for some time..Does your mother remember him? Will let you know when he has a chance to have a little look.

Can't believe my luck. After going back to the island in June I was unable to find out much so though it was nice to see Rothesay again it was a bit disappointing and sad to find that most of my friends had either left the island or had died. Please please contact me I would love to here from anyone.

I would like to reply to both Karl from Grimsby and Lindsay from Orr. I am not sure how well your parents or myself will remember each other, it was so long ago. I left the island when I was just seventeen and deeply regret not keeping in touch with folk as for many of them it is now too late. I recently made a long overdue return visit to Bute with my family. They found the beauty of the island breathtaking and couldn't stop taking photos. I, like many of us, had forgotten how beautiful it was and I don't think we appreciated it as much when we were young, too busy getting off the island as fast as possible to see if the big wide world measured up to what we had seen on the screen.

It is only in the past day or so that I have found this site and not only have I found you but I found a message on the Bute Sons and Daughters website from a gentleman we have been corresponding with to say that he had seen a photo of our class at Rothesay Academy for 1951 published in The Buteman. I will do my best to get hold of a copy.
All take care.
All the best

Betty

Anne Louise,

I well remember Wullie Miller the sweep. I am older than your mother but my youngest sister Nessie Barr nee Borland was about her age. She went to Rothesay Public School.

Have you tried to contact Rothesay Academy? The school was burnt down in the late 1950's but they may have copies of school photgraphs or magazines. As I left the Academy prior to it burning down the Headmaster was unable to help me. They had packaged all material saved after the blaze, to a place of safe keeping. The Academy will tell you where everything is stored.

Another thought is the Buteman newspaper Archives. Carnegy Libraries usually keep old copies of newspapers on microfiche. They do in Ayr for their local area. Perhaps the administration of Argyle and Bute have a similar scheme in their library.

God luck with your search
